bladeglider_18Nissan recently showed off the BladeGlider Concept, an all-electric vehicle that features breathtaking design and a host of futuristic technologies. The Japanese automaker says the concept vehicle is not just a design practice, but functions as a design proposal for a future production vehicle. The leader of electric vehicle production in the world is Nissan at the moment, and the BladeGlider Concept is helping to further establish the automaker’s commanding lead in the marketplace. The design of the BladeGlider allowed form to follow after function. One of the aims of the vehicle was to produce an EV that could be exhilarating to look at and drive or ride inside, creating an electric mode of transportation driving enthusiasts can dream about. At the same time, the vehicle promises sustainable operation, helping address environmental concerns consumers might have. In the end, the BladeGlider was designed to offer technology like no other vehicle, with excellent acceleration and a driving experience that feels more like gliding than anything else. “The goal was to revolutionize the architecture of the vehicle to provoke new emotions, provide new value and make visible for consumers how Zero Emissions can help redefine our conception of vehicle basics,” said Francois Bancon, division general manager of Product Strategy and Product Planning at Nissan.

Even the general shape of the BladeGlider challenges popular vehicle design conventions. The nose is narrow and features a narrow front track, going against vehicle conventions established well over a hundred years ago. The nature of electric vehicles has allowed Nissan to experiment with shapes and designs that are not possible in a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, showing how much versatility electric cars can bring to the market.

When Nissan designers set out to create the BladeGlider Concept, they focused on aerodynamics and downforce to provide drivers with an exciting experience. The result is perhaps the most exotic electric vehicle to date.
